about

Kimchi and other fermented foods are an important focal point of life at Punctum, a slow burning fire around which the community assembles. This collection of recordings was created to honour and celebrate the symbiosis we humans of Punctum have with the microbial cultures, the magick they work with the food inside of the airtight fermenting crocks and the benefits they bring for our bodies and souls when ingested. By no means is this collection exhaustive or methodical. These are just the sounds we picked and collected along the way, using a range of microphones including condenser, dynamic, contact and hydrophonic ones. They have been honed to perfection for your ear-tickling experience and for fermenting them freely into your own sonic works in any way you like. Enjoy!

Label IND indicates isolated individual samples.
Label KIM stands for Korean term kimjang, an event of a community getting together to prepare kimchi for fermentation. This indicates more complexly textured stereophonic recordings.
Label FRM indicates sounds of the fermenting kimchi.
Label BON indicates bonus material from a session of Petr Vrba playing empty fermentation crocks with his trumpet or as percussive instruments.

The collection was created in collaboration with Radim Labuda, a post-practice artist, and the musician Petr Vrba, within project Fermentation revisited financially supported by Ministry of Culture Czech republic.
